Dems annoyed stock market didn't go into a panic.

Shades of 2008. A TARP deal was rapidly set as markets tanked. Oh, the good-ole days to be a big spending lawmaker. I just got off the phone with a source on Capitol Hill who has spent the past few days trying to convince Republicans to vote for a debt ceiling hike. He told me that the biggest obstacle he faces has been "market complacency." "Frankly, a bit of panic would be very helpful right now," he said. As he explained it, lots of people in Washington, D.C. expected that this would be a week marked by panic in the markets. Stocks would tank. Bonds would get clobbered. The dollar would do something dramatic. And all of this would help convince reluctant lawmakers that they had to reach a compromise on the debt ceiling. More here via @Drudge_Report.

New intimidation tactics against gathering signatures for CA ballot propositions

It struck me as odd yesterday. I had just decided to get involved in gathering signatures to help overturn the disgusting new law that forces sexual preference information into CA elementary school curricula. I had Rush Limbaugh on in the car, and here comes this ad where people are saying NOT to sign petitions. And scaring listeners into thinking petition gatherers are identity thieves. Interesting timing.... As backers of several high-profile  ballot measures  hit the streets looking for signatures, a new radio ad has surfaced warning listeners that signing initiative petitions puts voters "at risk for  identity theft. " The 60-second spot, which is airing on at least one Southern California radio station, features a man telling his spouse she should not have signed a petition at the grocery store. "The  Legislature  called it an identity theft starter kit. Now we really need to watch our bank statements and credit information," he says. "That's it,

ATTN: CA BLOGGERS! Anti Gay History in CA schools Petition drive has started!

Image
October 12, 2011 is the deadline to turn in over 500,000 valid registered-voter signatures in order to get a measure on the ballot to reverse the horrible decision by the CA legislature and Governor Brown to teach our ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN about the SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND PREFERENCE of historical figures in the CA Social Science curriculum. The petitions should be available later this week, after the lawyers review the measure and give the OK. Please go to  http://stopsb48.com/ and click on Sign a Petition under the Take Action heading.  They will send petitions to you in a few days when they become available. SB48 forces children to study materials that tell them their families’ values are wrong. It forces schools to use a social science curriculum that promotes the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender lifestyles that undermine traditional family relationships. It does not allow parents to protect their kids by opting out of classes that promote homosexuality. It forces scho

Russell Brand wrote an excellent blog post about Amy Winehouse

Image
Russell Brand is Katy Perry's husband, and a former addict. I never listened to Amy Winehouse sing, but I followed some of her stories in the news and I was aware she struggled with addiction. Of course the toxicology results won't be in for 2 to 4 weeks. However, it is true that taking heavy drugs will depress the breathing centers of the brain. When it gets to the point that the person forgets to breathe, they die. Like Anna Nicole Smith. Like John Belushi. Like Kurt Cobain. Like any garden-variety person who plays with fire and never wakes up. Russell says he finally conquered his addiction at the age of 27, the same age Amy was when she passed away. He says he'd known Amy for a long time before he had ever heard her sing ... calling her voice "entirely human yet laced with the divine." Here's his blog, in its entirety : For Amy When you love someone who suffers from the disease of addiction you await the phone call. There will be a phone call. The

A girl with a dragon tattoo, Rule 5

I am in the process of reading the novel The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo on my Kindle right now, so that is where my mind is at. I love a good "book". Beware of reddened body parts, not spider bites so much

Image
via fox 31 Denver No, this is not a joke. There is a story  today about how a 40-y-o man died of 19 black widow spider bites. They show a picture of the top of his foot with small bruises, but what alarms me more is the overall redness and swelling. That is a sign of a rapidly growing infection called cellulitis. This happened to me once. I had a small cyst on my left upper arm that remained for years, not doing much. Two days after giving birth to child #4, I looked down at my left upper arm and it was red all over the bicep area, swollen and hot. Apparently what had happened was that bacteria from childbirth colonized the area and took over. If this had happened 100 years ago, I would probably have died. As it was, I got onto antibiotics and had the wound surgically cleaned. It was in such bad shape in there that it could not be closed and had to heal in the open position, leaving a roundish, deep, ugly scar. I suffered a lot because the wound was on the part of the arm whe

Did Obamacare kill the Obama recovery?

Image
By:   Conn Carroll  |  Senior Editorial Writer  Follow Him @Conncarroll  |  07/21/11 9:44 AM The Heritage Foundation’s James Sherk has a fascinating  new paper  out showing that the U.S. economic recovery stalled almost immediately after Obamacare became law. Before Obamacare was passed, private sector job creation had been averaging 67,600 net new jobs a month. After Obamacare passed net private sector job creation fell to 6,400 jobs a month. Sherk identifies some provisions of Obamacare that discourage job creation: Businesses with more than 50 workers will see their costs for health coverage rise—they must purchase more expensive government-approved insurance or pay a penalty; Businesses with fewer than 50 workers have a strong incentive to maintain this size, to avoid these higher costs; and Employers face considerable uncertainty about what constitutes qualifying health coverage and what it will cost. They also do not know what the health care market or their health care costs wil

Hey Obama: What are you doing w 181 billion per month if not paying bills?

Image
There is enough money coming in to the federal government each month to pay for debt service, social security, medicare and all military and TSA obligations. So exactly what is Obama planning to do with all that money. More trips abroad? More evenings out on the town? More Kobe beef and expensive champagne? What! I think Obama is holding grandma hostage so that he can keep spending over our credit limit. We should cut up his credit card. Video via ICaucus.

Ralph Feinnes was FINE! Goodbye Voldemort. Rule 5.5

Image
No, I don't have the hots for Voldemort. Eeew. Thing is, I was torqued all these years that Ralph Feinnes was picked to play the repugnant character, because Feinnes is a hottie. Feast your eyes on these pics. From The English Patient to Wuthering Heights, this man cut a wide swath. Tonight Maggie's Notebook salutes the Military with a moving post. And Saturday night is bath night at Theospark. Mila Kunis at American Power. While the original Rule 5er, R S McCain features an upskirt photo .

It's official. Gay history will be taught to my public school kids.

I am in a state of shock and mourning over this. Is it possible to overturn it through the initiative process? My intuition tells me that over 50% of California parents will object to the gay agenda being taught in elementary school without an opt-out option. Just a hunch.

Replacing Beck with Beckel, et tu, Fox?

Image
It is a mean joke, replacing Glenn Beck with Bob Beckel and other unnotables in the new show TheFive on Fox News. It is not that I watched Beck that often, but I know his heart was in the right place. And why am I left wondering why Fox and Beck parted ways so quickly after Beck became an outspoken proponent of Israel, and so soon after Fox was bought by the Saudis. Hmmm. In the meantime, Beckel rubs salt in the wounds. Yesterday he called us, the Tea Party, anarchists. He said, "they like to call themselves patriots, but they are anarchists." Hey, Bob. Look at the header on my blog. That may look like anarchy to you because your kind are always projecting your hatred and tendency to violence onto others. It was in reality a large, peaceful gathering of dedicated Americans who are genuinely worried about the direction our once-great nation is headed. These people had the temerity to bring trash bags to the National Mall and clean up after themselves. But you don'

There is nothing "Federal" about the John Smith Reserve Bank

Can we stop calling it the Federal Reserve Bank? This name is the perpetuation of a lie that has fooled generations of Americans. We should insist on truth in advertising. I like John Smith Reserve Bank. Unless you can come up with a better name? ###

Harry Potter, a bittersweet ending

Image
I remember being irked when my now 22-y-o daughter brought home the book Harry Potter way back in the beginning. I had given her twenty dollars for the school book faire, and I hoped she would buy some low-priced paperbacks. She bought one expensive hard-backed book on the recommendation of the book lady. Of course we all fell in love with the book and camped out at bookstores at midnight as each new book was released. I still read a chapter a night to my 8-y-o son, and look forward to re-reading the books with my younger kids. It is the gift that keeps on giving. Many thanks to the cast and crew for making such wonderful movies. I can't believe that they were able to keep up the quality through EIGHT movies. Usually sequels are terrible. They all deserve much kudos. L to R, the actors who play Voldemort, Harry, Hermione, Ron and Draco at the British premiere July 15th is the official U.S. release date, but there may be opportunities to see it earlier.  Studio lot fundrais

Plant a vegetable garden, go to jail?

Image
A woman in Michigan faces 93 days of jail time for replanting her front yard with vegetable planting beds after it was torn up for a sewer replacement project. She is standing up for her property rights, demanding a jury trial, and the city of Oak Park is throwing the book at her. I used to watch the show Victory Garden on PBS on weekend morning. The traditional Victory Garden was planted in WWI or WWII in back and front yards as a way to ease pressure on the food supply and to help the war effort. Is it me or is the boot of government falling too heavily on our necks nowadays. One commenter recommended that she should plant bamboo if forced to replant her yard. That'll teach those complaining neighbors! Another thing. With all the blight in Detroit nowadays, the city spends their time harassing THIS WOMAN?
